How often should I be changing my toothbrush?

dentist in mosman

The age old question that no one ever seems sure about the answer!

The general advice is to change your toothbrush every 3 months. When the bristles start fraying this is a good indication that you are due a new one, frayed bristles will not brush your teeth well enough or thoroughly enough, even if you are trying your hardest! These guidelines also apply to electric toothbrush heads, not just manual brushes. Children may need to change their brushes more regularly due to more vigorous brushing!

For children, it’s great to make buying a new toothbrush into an exciting thing so they will be excited to brush their teeth. Tell them they can pick a toothbrush with their favourite character on it as a ‘treat’!

If you have been sick or unwell it is best to change your toothbrush, especially if it is stored close to other brushes. It is best for hygiene and health to bin it and grab a new one! It’s a great idea to buy a multipack of brushes, then you know you always have a spare one handy if you need it (or for forgetful guests!). Make sure you rinse your brush after every use and store it with the bristles facing up so it can air dry.  Happy Brushing! J
